I love the random nature of my professional life. Yesterday I wrote a magazine piece that included drunken bees. I interviewed Sam J. Miller and we talked about superpowers. But the most magical yesterday thing?
Fairy shrimp. Fairy. Shrimp.
These tiny, translucent crustaceans come in several colors, swim upside down, and depend on the ephemeral for their very survival. Fairy shrimp live in vernal pools, the temporary ponds that form in spring and dry up come summer. They lay eggs on the edges of the pool. The eggs will only hatch if the pond disappears, and then reappears. Magical. Right?
